Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16, 1937 - August 17 15th, 2015) was an American dancer and actress popular for her character in the role of Batgirl in the 1960s' tv series Batman and as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer of female superheroes" on television. Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. In 1951 her family moved from Illinois to Dallas. There she attended W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas and Sunset High School. However she didn't finish her education because she had only "one PE credit". Craig was a part of Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the role of young ballerina from the youngest corps after being recognized by Alexandra Danilova who is a dancer and teacher. While she was performing as Batgirl the training proved very beneficial. In 1957, she quit the company's ballet program due to an issue about casting changes. After that, she relocated to Los Angeles with the hope of making it a career for her. However, she soon found herself in film roles. One of her earliest television parts was in the episode from the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover" 1958) alongside Neil Hamilton, who played her stepfather (later Hamilton played Police Commissioner James Gordon, Batgirl's father). After her appearances in The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story (all 1959) and Gidget (all 1958) she was also in guest roles as Beverly Mills on the TV show Mr. Lucky (also 1959). Craig made an appearance with Bing Crosby in High Time (1960) as well as in Seven Women from Hell (1961) which was co-starred with Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as a guest star on the Western Laramie show "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley's character in It was at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin' Cousins (64). She also starred in the science-fiction film Mars Needs Women (1966) and appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as an in-character Russian dancer who was paired with James Coburn.
